Recommended Dealers:

This is a list of dealers with whom I have had pleasant and honest dealings, It is not meant to be exhaustive. There are many good dealers with whom I have had no contact and are probably as good as those listed below. Experience is the only teacher. I am listing the dealers in several categories, providing a link (I don't get kickbacks), and ranking them in the order of who I have dealt with most.

Auction Houses

Frank Robinson - No nonsense, good coins, and typically very nice variety. Quarterly auctions and fun to deal with.
Classical Numismatic Group - A giant in the field. The bidding on their printed auction can be fierce. Try their online auctions at their website.
Harlan Berk - Another major firm with quarterly auctions and fixed price sales. I find them to be a bit pricey, but their coins are excellent.
Rauch - a Swiss firm. There is a small language barrier, but you can get some good deals here.
Sixbid.com - A clearinghouse for major auctions.

Vcoin Sellers

VCoins is the brainchild of Bill Puetz and has revolutionized online shopping. The format has attracted some of the biggest names in Ancient Coins as well as collectors divesting themselves of collections. The search engine makes comparative shopping easy. Don't be hesitant to use email and dicker. It never hurts to ask. Vcoins requires high standards from its dealers, so all of them are quality dealers. These are the ones I have had experience with.

Nemisis Ancients - I think Herbert wins the quality/cost championship. I am a regular.
Ancient Imports - Marc is great to deal with and has a very large and varied offering.
Ancient Coin Art - Massive inventory. Hundreds of Roman Provincial coins, although they are too pricey for me. His Roman Republican coins on the other hand are a good value.
Incitatus Coins Steve McBride has coins of all grades and prices that are extremely reasonable. He also owns a carving of mine, so you know he has good taste. Look at his Imperial bronzes.
Flavian Logic - Good, eclectic dealer with very fair prices. One of the first dealers I bought from and I have always been satisfied.
Tom Vossen - Very fair pricing and the coins are often uncommon.
B. P. Murphy - My Roman Republican collection is probably half from Barry and half from Ancient Coin Art. Something for almost every budget. Some very high quality coins.
Beast Coin - Another large inventory with a specialty in quality late Roman Bronzes. Great service.
Sphinx - The place to shop for Islamic and Eastern coins.
500 BC - Allen is selling off his collection and I have been lucky enough to obtain several Greek silver coins from him. Inventory is smaller than most, but quality and prices are good.
Classical Coins - Smaller inventory, but the prices are very good.
Amphora Coins - David Hendin's online store. Specialty is ancient coins from the Middle East.
Civitas - Good prices - nice coins
Ancient Delights - My one purchase from this South American dealer was excellent all around.
J. Jencek - Quality coins with professional service.
Vaughn Coins - Good coins, good prices.
David Conners - David offers lower quality coins at very low prices. Lately quality is getting better and there is much to chose from.
Herakles - High quality with professional service.
Calgary Coins - To be honest, I have not purchased from Robert yet. I actually feel guilty about this because Robert has been so helpful. His prices are good, he has a nice variety of coins, and his knowledge is vast. I think it is just happenstance that I have not purchased anything yet. I am sure I will soon.

Online Sellers

Beware the Ides of Ebay. Carefully select your sellers and DO NOT buy anything that looks odd or with a price too good to be true. The amount of fraud on Ebay has increased lately. The following dealers have a good reputation. As stated above, there are certainly other good dealers on Ebay. These are the ones I have dealt with fairly often.

Ancient Auction House - AAH -Every night at about 8:30 CT about 30 coins are offered. Quality varies = something for every budget. Probably the highest volume dealer on Ebay and with a good reputation.
Ancient Treasures - Thursday nights come rain or shine. Pretty similar offerings as AAH, but just a tad less quality.
Silenos - Simple auction titles force you to look for the details. Often has uncommon (for Ebay) coins with variety of quality. I have bought quite a few Roman Imperial bronzes from him.
Tom Vossen - AKA Spekholz - Greek fractions seem to be a specialty, but he offers a nice variety. I have gotten some terrific deals there.
Mediterraneancoins - One of the best on the internet. Quality and unusual offerings for Ebay. Personal Issues have forced them to curtail auctions lately. I hope they come back soon. Does not take Paypal.
WCNC Online - Nice coins. I think their grading is a bit inflated, but the pictures are good so you can decide.
Cameleon Coins - New, with some pretty good coins.
Bassem Doau - Lebanese dealer. Says he takes Paypal, but I have had problems. Early on great deals were to be had from him, but both he and other bidders caught on. Still, he offers some original coins.
Numizmatik Zagreb - Straight from the Balkans. Very nice Roman bronzes.
Hermes Coins - Late night auctions. Medium quality coins at fair prices.
Legion 8 - Many Roman Imperial coins. Pictures are not that good. Coins of lower quality, but sometimes...
Pagane - The dean of online auctioneers. Very nice coins. Some repatinated. Recently moved from Yahoo to Ebay.
Dirty Old Coins - Not highest grade, but nice coins. Intermittant auctions
Joviel - Intermittant auctions. I have bought some very nice early imperial bronzes from him.
