Plaster casts of original sculptures

Present Projects

First completed Trajan plaster cast:

Under the tutelage of Caroll Gibson an experienced and talented sculptor of coins (see the coins on my front page), I am attempting to make casts of some of my woodcarvings and I am beginning to work in clay. My first attempts at both of these projects are shown below. The Sestertius is a fantasy piece. The Roma on the original Trajan sestertius loses much of its integrity as it is enlarged, thus I took a similar reverse off of a Napoleon medal and adapted it.

The coins in the "Most Beautiful" series are a) the Heracleia stater, b) the Carthage Tetradrachm (in progress), and c. A siculo-Punic reverse featuring the horse looking over its shoulder. I hope to go on to do 10 of these in the series.

plaster cast of carthage tetradrachm of Dido first queen of the city same as above but with two casts. one before and one after sanding.
The cast on the far right above is the cast made from the mold taken directly from the clay. the other cast has been scraped, scoured and sanded to give it a nice clean look. It still needs some work, however. You can see that some of the bead in the border did not turn out and there are a few tiny air holes that couldn't be repaired by sanding. These will be sealed in or shaped with clay and the whole piece will receive a varnish finish.
